all about theatre five star review

Zog and the Flying Doctors took flight at The Lowry this past weekend, captivating audiences with a delightful blend of humour, heart, and high-flying adventure. Based on the beloved book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, this production by Freckle Productions and Rose Theatre brought the vibrant world of Zog, Princess Pearl, and Sir Gadabout to life with dazzling stagecraft and an inspiring story.

In this charming sequel, the ambitious but clumsy dragon Zog, now a flying doctor, teams up with Princess Pearl and Sir Gadabout on a mission to assist various ailing creatures. Their journey includes helping a sunburned mermaid, a unicorn with too many horns, and a lion with the flu. The plot thickens when Princess Pearl's royal uncle, the King, attempts to confine her to traditional princess duties. However, when the King himself falls ill, Pearl and her friends rise to the challenge, proving that princesses can be doctors too. The story beautifully weaves themes of friendship, perseverance, and challenging societal norms into an engaging narrative that resonates with audiences of all ages.

The set design and lighting were nothing short of spectacular, transporting the audience to a whimsical world where dragons soar and mermaids shimmer. The creative use of puppets and props added a layer of enchantment, especially the mermaid perched on a rock, which left the young audience members in awe. The costumes were simple yet effective, perfectly capturing the essence of each character, from Zog’s bright orange scales to the King’s regal yet ridiculous attire.

Musically, the show features an engaging score by Mike Igglesden. The catchy songs, including the memorable finale “If It Wasn’t For You,” not only entertain but also underscore the story’s themes of kindness and cooperation. The music enhances the emotional impact of the performance and invites audience participation, adding to the overall enjoyment.
