all about theatre five star review

Our visit to The Theatre Cafe Diner during my birthday trip to London was an absolute highlight! Nestled in the heart of Theatreland, this diner offers a full theatrical dining experience like no other. We were in London for three days, catching five West End shows, and this diner quickly became a must-visit on our list.

On our second day, we had a tight schedule with two shows, and I booked a 5:45 pm dinner, not realising that Matilda would start earlier due to the school summer holidays. The diner was packed when we arrived, and I was concerned we wouldn’t have enough time to enjoy our meal. However, the incredibly welcoming and talented staff quickly reassured us. They checked with the chef and suggested we opt for a quick main course, like the “Frank You for the Music” hot dog (£16.50). It was delicious, packed with bacon, cheddar, caramelised onions, and served with fries—perfect for the price—and arrived in time for us to make it to the show.

The menu is full of Musical Theatre-themed dishes, with fun and creative names like “Whistle Down the Wings,” “Aaron Burr-ger,” and “Shuffle Off to Buffalo Chicken Burger.” They also have a cocktail menu featuring drinks like the “Bend and Schnapps,” “Long Island Iced Tea-nage Dream,” and “Madame Midori-bbles Sour”—all perfectly in tune with the theme.

The most memorable part of the evening was when my husband, Lawrence, secretly arranged for “Defying Gravity” from Wicked to be performed for my birthday. The performance was fantastic, and the performer wished me a happy birthday at the end of the song, making it a magical and unforgettable moment.

We had such a great time that we decided to return the next day for lunch. This time, it was quieter, allowing us to fully appreciate the diner’s incredible décor. The Theatre Café Diner is spread over two floors, with themed areas dedicated to some of the West End’s most-loved productions such as Cats, Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat, & Juliet, Kinky Boots and Shrek. They even have special booths, like the Six booth and a Heathers themed booth, as well as a Royal Box.

For lunch, we both ordered the “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” chicken burger (£18)—a crispy, cornflake-crusted delight. I asked for mine without the buffalo sauce, and they happily accommodated my request. For dessert, I went for the “Sing Out Lo-Cheese(cake)!” (£8.50), which was creamy and rich, while Lawrence chose “Bruce Bogtrotter’s Chocolate Cake” (£8.50), a decadent and indulgent treat.

The best part of the experience is the all-singing, all-dancing waiting staff. Not only are they incredibly friendly, but they’re also talented performers who serenade you with musical theatre classics and fan favourites throughout your meal. We even added a few requests to the request board, and they sang four of our chosen songs, including “Seasons of Love” from Rent and “Bring Him Home” from Les Misérables.

The Theatre Café Diner is a dream for any theatre lover. Whether you’re looking for a pre-theatre treat or just a joyful dining experience, this is the place to go. The food is simple but delicious, the atmosphere is electric, and the live performances are simply unforgettable. It truly became our Happy Place in London, and I can’t wait to visit again!
