David Baddiel may be best known to grown-ups for his sharp stand-up comedy, but he’s also a celebrated children’s author. Now, his much-loved book The Parent Agency has been transformed into a lively, laugh-out-loud musical, with music by Everybody’s Talking About Jamie composer Dan Gillespie Sells. Making its world premiere at Chester’s Storyhouse, this brand-new show is bursting with energy, humour, and a whole lot of heart.

Barry Bennett is about to turn eleven, but he’s convinced he has the most boring parents in the world. Their strict, they’re always tired, and worst of all… they named him Barry! Frustrated, he wishes for new parents—and in the blink of an eye, he’s transported to Youngdon in the United Kid-dom, home of The Parent Agency, where children get to choose their own parents before their 11th birthday.

Over the course of his adventure, Barry meets a variety of outrageous parental candidates: the fabulously wealthy Rader-Wellorffs, the fitness-fanatic Fwahms, the ultra-laid-back Cools and the celebrity-obsessed Vlassorinas, But as Barry navigates this wild world of parent auditions, he starts to realise that maybe—just maybe—his real parents weren’t so bad after all…

The production is a visual and musical treat. Jon Bausor’s inventive set seamlessly shifts between Barry’s bedroom, the dazzling headquarters of The Parent Agency, and the wildly different homes of his potential new parents. The costumes are a joy—whether it’s the neon-clad Fwahms, the hippy-dippy Cools, or the influencer-styled Vlassorinas, each set of parents has its own distinct and hilarious look. Adding to the spectacle, the show features immersive special effects, including smoke, bubbles, and even money falling from the ceiling into the audience, making for a truly magical experience.

Dan Gillespie Sells’ catchy and heartfelt songs elevate the storytelling, giving Barry (and the audience) plenty of toe-tapping moments. From big ensemble numbers to poignant solos, the music perfectly complements the show’s humor and heart. The opening number, "Barry," is a standout, setting the tone with its high energy and witty lyrics.

Max Bispham is a revelation as Barry, carrying the show with charm, wit, and a powerhouse voice. He’s rarely offstage and delivers both the comedy and emotional beats with ease. Rebecca McKinnis and Rakesh Boury shine in their multiple roles, transforming effortlessly between the different parent characters and bringing each one to life with brilliant comedic timing.

Alan Vicary is a delight as Grandpa and the imposing CEO of The Parent Agency, while Natasha Cayabyab and Kazmin Borrer deliver plenty of laughs as Barry’s phone-obsessed sisters and The Parent Agency’s ultra-efficient assistants. Elliot Broadfoot also deserves a mention for his hilarious turn as the larger-than-life Peevish, bringing plenty of scene-stealing moments.

The Parent Agency is a riotous, fast-paced family musical packed with humour, heart, and high-energy performances. With its witty script, catchy tunes, and dazzling visuals, this production is a surefire hit for kids and grown-ups alike. It’s a show that makes you laugh, makes you think, and—most importantly—makes you appreciate your parents.
