All About Theatre Four Star Review

Sister Act The Musical, a beloved adaptation of the iconic 1992 film, has made its way to Storyhouse in Chester, and it’s nothing short of spectacular. Featuring original music by Tony® and 8-time Oscar® winner Alan Menken, with lyrics by Glenn Slater, the musical blends Motown, soul, and disco into a heavenly score. Directed by Bill Buckhurst, this production showcases a stunning cast including West End star Landi Oshinowo as Deloris Van Cartier and Coronation Street legend Wendi Peters as Mother Superior.

Set in late 1970s Philadelphia, the story follows Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva aspiring to make it big on the soul scene. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she witnesses her gangster boyfriend Curtis Jackson commit a murder. To protect her, old police friend Eddie Souther places her in a convent under the guise of Sister Mary Clarence. Initially met with scepticism by Mother Superior, Deloris gradually transforms the convent’s struggling choir, helping her fellow sisters find their true voices while rediscovering her own purpose in life. The narrative beautifully captures themes of friendship, redemption, and the power of music.

Morgan Large’s set design frames the story within the majestic structure of the convent, using large stained-glass windows and a dilapidated church backdrop that add to the visual charm. Tim Mitchell’s lighting design is exceptional, with disco balls and vibrant colours that enhance the energetic mood of the show. The costumes are a delightful blend of traditional nun habits and 70s disco flair, especially in scenes featuring Eddie Souther’s dazzling attire and the gangsters’ high heels. The visual elements are both striking and immersive, perfectly complementing the musical’s lively spirit.
