All About Theatre five star review

"Paranormal Activity" at Leeds Playhouse is a stage adaptation directed by the visionary Felix Barrett and written by the talented Levi Holloway. Inspired by the cult classic 2007 film "Paranormal Activity," this production introduces a fresh perspective on the story while maintaining the eerie essence that made the original film a hit. The collaborative effort between Barrett and Holloway ensures a unique theatrical experience that stands out in the horror genre.

"Paranormal Activity" follows James and Lou, an American couple who have moved to London, only to be haunted by a demonic presence that has plagued Lou since childhood. As they settle into their new home, unsettling events unfold, blending supernatural terror with psychological tension. Lou's past trauma and the ambiguity of her experiences add depth to the horror, making the audience question whether the haunting is real or a product of her mind.

James grapples with supporting Lou while dealing with his own doubts, creating a fraught dynamic that drives the tension. The intrusive presence of James' mother, Carolanne, and the arrival of clairvoyant Etheline, who attempts to understand the demonic activity, further complicate their situation.

The narrative uses darkness and the metaphor of eigengrau to explore themes of fear and the unknown. Misleading cues and escalating suspense keep the audience on edge, culminating in a series of shocking revelations.

The set design by Fly Davis is an impressive achievement, transforming the stage into a meticulously detailed two-story house that feels lived-in and authentic. This immersive environment draws the audience into the eerie world of James and Lou, with every corner and crevice contributing to the sense of foreboding.

Anna Watson's lighting design is masterful, utilising shadows and strategic lighting to heighten the suspense and create an atmosphere of dread. The interplay of light and dark keeps the audience's senses on high alert, enhancing the overall tension of the production.

Gareth Fry's sound design complements the visual elements perfectly, using subtle ambient noises and sudden, jarring sounds to keep the audience on edge. The soundscapes range from the quiet patter of rain to the abrupt, unsettling noises that punctuate key moments, adding depth to the horror.

Chris Fisher's special effects and illusions are seamlessly integrated, providing unexpected jump scares and moments of genuine terror. These effects are used sparingly but effectively, ensuring that each scare is impactful and contributes to the overall narrative. The combination of set, lighting, sound, and special effects creates a fully immersive and terrifying theatrical experience

The cast of "Paranormal Activity" delivers exceptional performances that bring depth and authenticity to the chilling narrative. Patrick Heusinger as James portrays a husband torn between supporting his wife and grappling with his own doubts. His nuanced performance captures the tension and frustration of a man caught in an increasingly terrifying situation.

Melissa James as Lou is captivating, embodying a woman haunted not only by a supernatural entity but also by her past traumas. Her portrayal of Lou's vulnerability and strength is compelling, making the audience empathise with her plight. Melissa James' ability to convey a range of emotions, from fear to determination, adds a powerful layer to the character.

Pippa Winslow shines as Carolanne, James' overbearing mother. Her performance adds an additional layer of tension to the narrative, as her intrusive and judgmental nature exacerbates the couple's already strained relationship. Winslow’s ability to switch from seemingly well-meaning to unsettlingly invasive creates a palpable sense of unease.

Jackie Morrison as Etheline, the clairvoyant, brings a mystical and enigmatic presence to the stage. Her portrayal of a spiritualist attempting to understand and combat the demonic presence adds depth to the story. Morrison's performance is both calming and unsettling, adding to the play's overall suspense.

The chemistry between the cast members is palpable, enhancing the believability of their interactions and the intensity of the unfolding drama. Each actor brings a unique energy to their role, contributing to a cohesive and gripping performance that keeps the audience engaged from start to finish.
