REVIEW - LES MISERABLES | LIVERPOOL EMPIRE | 17/01/2022

Les Miserables

Les Misérables is a legendary musical, captivating audiences worldwide since its debut in 1985. Returning to the Liverpool Empire after two years, this production is an outstanding showcase of theatrical excellence, combining a fresh new direction with the timeless story that fans adore. Known for its compelling narrative and unforgettable score, this production of Les Mis brings all the grandeur and emotional intensity that one would expect from such an iconic show.

Les Miserables

Les Miserables is an epic tale set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, weaving together themes of justice, redemption, love, and revolution. The story follows the life of Jean Valjean, a former convict who, after serving 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread, breaks parole in hopes of starting anew. His journey is one of profound transformation as he seeks redemption while being relentlessly pursued by the dogged Inspector Javert.

As Valjean strives to lead a righteous life, he becomes entangled in the lives of others, including the tragic Fantine, whose downfall leads Valjean to care for her daughter, Cosette. The story intensifies as it intersects with the lives of young revolutionaries, particularly Marius, who falls in love with Cosette, and Eponine, whose unrequited love for Marius adds a layer of poignant despair.

The narrative crescendos with the June Rebellion of 1832, where idealistic students take to the streets, believing in a cause greater than themselves. The barricades become the symbolic heart of the story, where characters’ fates intertwine amidst the chaos of battle. Each character's struggle is underscored by their internal battles—Valjean's quest for redemption, Javert's moral rigidity, and the young rebels' fight for freedom and justice.

This adaptation of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece captures the essence of the human spirit, exploring the complexities of right and wrong, and the enduring power of love and hope in the face of overwhelming odds. The story, delivered through a series of powerful musical numbers, resonates deeply, leaving the audience reflecting on its universal themes long after the final curtain falls.

Les Miserables

The set design by Matt Kinley is nothing short of breathtaking. The intricate and varied sets transport the audience from the dark, oppressive world of the prison to the vibrant streets of Paris and the somber, tragic barricades of the revolution. The quick and seamless scene changes are a marvel, adding a dynamic pace to the production. Paule Constable’s lighting design adds to the atmosphere, with shadows and subtle hues enhancing the mood of each scene. The costumes, designed by Andreane Neofitou and Christine Rowland, bring a splash of colour to the otherwise grim setting, perfectly capturing the era and adding depth to the characters.

The music, conducted by Ben Ferguson, is the heartbeat of the production. From the powerful ensemble numbers like "One Day More" to the haunting solo performances of "I Dreamed a Dream" and "Bring Him Home," the orchestra’s performance is flawless. The score, performed live, adds an unmatched emotional weight to the story, making each note resonate with the audience.

Les Miserables

Dean Chisnall as Jean Valjean delivers a career-defining performance. His portrayal of Valjean’s journey is powerful and nuanced, with his rendition of "Bring Him Home" being a standout moment that left many in the audience in tears. Nic Greenshields as Javert is equally impressive, with his commanding presence and vocal strength shining in "Stars," earning one of the night’s biggest ovations. Katie Hall as Fantine, Rebecca Ferrin as Cosette, and Jenna Innes as Eponine each bring a unique depth to their roles, with vocal performances that are both moving and memorable. Will Callan, in his professional debut as Marius, is a revelation, bringing both strength and vulnerability to his character.

Special mention must be made of Ian Hughes and Helen Walsh as the Thenardiers, who provided much-needed comic relief with their impeccable timing and chemistry. Their performances brought laughter and lightness to the otherwise heavy narrative, balancing the show beautifully.
