"& Juliet," the vibrant, reimagined tale of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, has taken the Shaftesbury Theatre by storm. Directed by Luke Sheppard, this musical offers a fresh and exhilarating twist on "Romeo & Juliet" by exploring what might have happened if Juliet chose to live after Romeo’s death. The musical, featuring a book by David West Read and a soundtrack of Max Martin's iconic pop hits, has garnered rave reviews for its innovative storytelling, dynamic performances, and infectious energy. This performance, featuring Bessy Ewa as Juliet, was nothing short of spectacular.

The plot of "& Juliet" begins where Shakespeare’s original ends. Instead of succumbing to grief, Juliet decides to rewrite her destiny. Encouraged by Anne Hathaway (Cassidy Janson), who steps out from the shadow of her husband William Shakespeare (Oliver Tompsett), Juliet embarks on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. The story takes audiences on a whirlwind adventure across Europe, filled with humour, romance, and poignant moments of introspection.

Juliet’s new journey is not without its complications. Along the way, she encounters her former love Romeo (Tom Francis), thought to be dead but very much alive, and finds herself entangled in a love triangle with the earnest and lovable Francois (Tim Mahendran). Themes of self-empowerment, identity, and second chances are interwoven with the narrative, making it a resonant and uplifting experience.

The set design by Soutra Gilmour is a feast for the eyes, seamlessly blending the historical and the contemporary. The use of bright colours, bold designs, and dynamic set pieces creates a vibrant and immersive environment that enhances the storytelling. The lighting by Howard Hudson complements the set perfectly, using a mix of dramatic spotlights, colourful washes, and subtle effects to reflect the emotional tone of each scene.

Paloma Young's costume design is equally impressive, combining Elizabethan styles with modern fashion sensibilities to create unique and eye-catching ensembles. The costumes help to establish the characters’ personalities and add to the overall visual spectacle of the show.

Max Martin's music is the heart and soul of "& Juliet," featuring a medley of his greatest hits that have been cleverly woven into the narrative. Songs like "Since U Been Gone," "Roar," "Baby One More Time," and "Can't Stop the Feeling!" are not just musical interludes but integral parts of the storytelling. Each song is reinterpreted to fit the context of Juliet's journey, making them feel fresh and relevant. The live band delivers these pop anthems with energy and flair, ensuring that every musical number is a showstopper.

The cast of "& Juliet" delivers extraordinary performances that bring the characters to life with depth, humour, and charisma. Bessy Ewa, stepping in as Juliet's understudy, shines in the titular role. Her portrayal is filled with strength, vulnerability, and infectious energy. Ewa's vocal prowess and emotional depth make Juliet’s journey compelling and relatable.

Cassidy Janson as Anne Hathaway is a standout, bringing warmth, wit, and a powerful voice to her role. Her chemistry with Oliver Tompsett's Shakespeare is electric, creating a dynamic and engaging duo. Tompsett’s Shakespeare is both charming and comically self-aware, providing many of the show’s lighter moments.

Julius D’silva as Lance and Malinda Parris as Nurse deliver fantastic comedic performances, their timing impeccable and their interactions delightful. Tom Francis as Romeo captivates with his charismatic and slightly egotistical portrayal, adding a new dimension to the character. Tim Mahendran’s Francois is endearing and earnest, providing a perfect counterbalance to Romeo’s bravado.

Alex Thomas-Smith as May is a revelation, bringing depth and sensitivity to the role. Their portrayal of May's journey of self-acceptance and love adds a poignant layer to the story, making it one of the show’s most touching elements.
