Hope Mill Theatre offers a delightful peek behind the curtain with Seabright’s production of Alexander S. Bermange’s "I Wish My Life Were Like a Musical." This comedic musical revue pokes fun at the beloved genre of musical theatre while celebrating its quirks and charms. With clever direction and choreography by Matthew Parker, the show provides a light-hearted, insider’s look at the trials and triumphs of life on stage.

"I Wish My Life Were Like a Musical" doesn’t follow a traditional narrative. Instead, it’s an engaging collection of comedic skits and songs performed by four talented actors. Each song humorously explores different aspects of the theatre world, from nerve-wracking auditions and tiny audiences to diva moments and Broadway dreams. The show deftly weaves together references to iconic musicals like "Wicked," "Les Misérables," and "Phantom of the Opera," making it a treat for die-hard musical fans and casual viewers alike.

The minimalistic set and lighting perfectly complement the intimate nature of the production. With just a piano and a few well-placed props, the focus remains on the performers and their witty, insightful songs. The music, composed by Bermange, is both humorous and poignant, with catchy tunes that parody and pay homage to the musical theatre tradition. The single act runtime of approximately 70 minutes ensures the show remains tight and engaging throughout.

The cast of Luke Harley, Sev Keoshgerian, Jessi O’Donnell, and Julie Yammanee is exceptional, each bringing their unique talents to a variety of roles. Harley shines as a football fan who secretly loves musicals, while Keoshgerian and O’Donnell’s duet about the perils of onstage romance is a comedic highlight. Yammanee’s performance as an ambitious soloist yearning for the spotlight is both hilarious and endearing. Their chemistry and versatility make every skit a joy to watch, and their ability to handle rapid character changes with ease is particularly impressive.

"I Wish My Life Were Like a Musical" at Hope Mill Theatre is a delightful romp through the world of musical theatre. Its witty script, catchy songs, and stellar performances ensure a thoroughly entertaining experience for all audiences. Whether you're a seasoned theatre aficionado or new to the genre, this show offers plenty of laughs and memorable moments. It’s a short but sweet production that leaves you smiling, proving that even behind-the-scenes chaos can be utterly charming. Four stars!
