I Should Be So Lucky THE MUSICAL

"I Should Be So Lucky" at the Liverpool Empire is a vibrant jukebox musical celebrating the pop hits of Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW), the powerhouse behind some of the biggest chart-toppers of the late '80s and early '90s. With 10 number-one singles and over 30 songs, including tracks by Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Rick Astley, and Bananarama, the show offers a nostalgia-filled journey for fans of that era. Directed and written by Debbie Isitt, creator of Nativity! The Musical, this production blends catchy tunes with a light-hearted story full of humour, romance, and high-energy performances.

The plot revolves around Ella (Lucie-Mae Sumner) and Nathan (Billy Roberts), a young couple on the brink of marriage. However, after Nathan learns a shocking family secret from his grandfather, he gets cold feet and leaves Ella at the altar. Heartbroken but determined not to waste her pre-paid honeymoon, Ella heads off to Turkey with her supportive family and friends. In Turkey, Ella meets Nadeem, a charming and handsome stranger who tries to help her move on from Nathan. Meanwhile, Nathan, realizing his grandfather’s mistake, rushes to Turkey with his best friend Ash to win back Ella’s heart. What follows is a series of humorous and touching encounters that build up to the musical’s exuberant conclusion.

Tom Rogers’ set design is a pastel-hued wonderland that seamlessly transitions from wedding venues to airports, Turkish resorts, and even casinos. The heart-shaped motifs and playful props, combined with Howard Hudson’s vibrant lighting and Andrzej Goulding’s clever video projections, create a visually stunning and sun-soaked atmosphere that transports the audience to a holiday setting.

The costumes, also designed by Rogers, are a joyful nod to late '80s and early '90s fashion, with bold colors and playful patterns that enhance the show’s whimsical tone. Jason Gilkison’s choreography is particularly noteworthy, especially in the large group numbers, where the energy and fun are palpable. The music, featuring iconic SAW hits like "Too Many Broken Hearts" and "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)," ties the show together, creating an irresistible, toe-tapping experience.

Lucie-Mae Sumner delivers a standout performance as Ella, capturing both the character’s vulnerability and strength. Her rendition of songs like "Especially for You" is heartfelt and engaging, making her character both relatable and endearing. Billy Roberts portrays Nathan with charm, successfully navigating the character’s journey from a conflicted groom to a determined suitor. His chemistry with Sumner adds depth to their love story.

Giovanni Spano, as Ash, brings humor and energy to the stage, often stealing scenes with his cheeky and charismatic portrayal. Matthew Croke’s Nadeem provides a compelling alternative love interest, making the love triangle engaging and believable. Kayla Carter and Jamie Chapman, as Ella’s friends Bonnie and Spencer, add humor and warmth to the production, further enhancing the show’s appeal.

A unique highlight is Kylie Minogue’s digital cameo as a sort of fairy godmother figure, providing advice to Ella through clever video projections. This innovative inclusion adds a touch of star power and nostalgia that fans of SAW’s music will particularly enjoy.
