all about theatre five star review

Here You Come Again brings Dolly Parton’s infectious spirit and iconic music to the UK stage in a way that is both endearing and relevant. Created by Bruce Vilanch, Gabriel Barre, and Tricia Paoluccio with added UK touches by Jonathan Harvey, this new musical gives a light-hearted twist to the challenges of COVID-19 lockdown. It stars Dolly as an unlikely guardian angel for Kevin, a down-on-his-luck fan navigating the pandemic in isolation. With a mix of well-loved Dolly songs and heartfelt comedy, this musical has taken on a journey through the UK, and it’s easy to see why it has audiences buzzing.

Set in his childhood attic, Kevin is holed up after a rough breakup during the COVID lockdowns. Feeling lost, he begins chatting to his Dolly Parton posters – only to find Dolly herself appears in the flesh to cheer him up and lend some guidance. With her wit and wisdom, Dolly helps Kevin see his problems in a new light, inspiring him to dust himself off and rediscover what makes him happy. Packed with witty one-liners, hilarious fourth-wall breaks, and musical numbers that hit all the right notes, the story is ultimately about resilience and the healing power of music.

Paul Wills’ set is a beautifully chaotic attic packed with nostalgia and Dolly memorabilia, creating the perfect backdrop for Kevin’s journey. From Dolly posters to quirky attic knick-knacks, it’s a detailed world that captures the imagination and takes audiences back in time. The lighting by Tim Deiling shifts seamlessly between moody moments and Dolly's vibrant sparkle, enhancing every emotional beat. The costume design leans into Dolly's larger-than-life glam and Kevin's everyday charm, making for a perfect contrast. And, of course, the music is a Dolly fan's dream, featuring hits like “Islands in the Stream,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You.” Each song is more than just a fan-favourite – it’s woven into the story with meaning, making for a soundtrack that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

Steven Webb shines as Kevin, bringing a wonderful balance of comedy and vulnerability to his role. His physical comedy, quick timing, and ability to connect with the audience make him an instantly lovable character. Webb’s vocals add a real heart to the show, especially during his solo numbers. Opposite him, Tricia Paoluccio embodies Dolly with uncanny accuracy, from the signature accent to the magnetic charm that has Dolly fans swooning. Her stage presence is electric, and her chemistry with Webb is the heartbeat of the show. Supporting cast members Aidan Cutler and Charlotte Elisabeth Yorke deserve praise for their energetic vocals and playful cameo roles, bringing extra laughs and depth to the story.
