All about theatre four star review

"Frozen the Musical," adapted from Disney's 2013 animated film "Frozen," brings the beloved story of Elsa and Anna to the stage with spectacular results. The musical, with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and book by Jennifer Lee, premiered on Broadway in 2018. Following its success in the U.S., the show made its way to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, enchanting London audiences with its magical tale and stunning production. The musical offers an expanded narrative with new songs and deeper character development, enriching the original story that captured hearts worldwide.

"Frozen the Musical" closely follows the journey of royal sisters Elsa and Anna in the kingdom of Arendelle. After the accidental death of their parents, Elsa struggles to control her ice powers, ultimately leading her to isolate herself from Anna to protect her. The story kicks off with young Elsa accidentally injuring Anna with her powers, setting the stage for the sisters' eventual estrangement. As adults, Elsa's coronation triggers a series of events that reveal her powers to the kingdom, causing her to flee and inadvertently plunge Arendelle into eternal winter.

Anna's quest to find Elsa and bring her back becomes the heart of the story. Along the way, she teams up with rugged ice harvester Kristoff, his loyal reindeer Sven, the charming yet duplicitous Hans, and the lovable snowman Olaf. The musical delves deeper into the sisters' relationship, emphasizing their bond and the personal growth they each undergo. This character-driven approach provides a richer, more emotionally resonant experience compared to the film.

The narrative is punctuated by moments of humour, adventure, and heartfelt emotion, exploring themes of love, sacrifice, and self-acceptance. Key scenes such as Elsa building her ice palace and Anna confronting her sister are expanded and given more dramatic weight, enhancing the overall storytelling.

The production design of "Frozen the Musical" is nothing short of breathtaking. Set designer Christopher Oram and video designer Finn Ross have created a visually stunning representation of Arendelle, blending traditional set pieces with cutting-edge digital effects. The stage seamlessly transforms from the royal palace to the icy wilderness, enhanced by the ethereal glow of the aurora borealis. Elsa's ice palace is a particular highlight, utilizing stage magic and visual effects to create a mesmerizing spectacle.

The lighting design plays a crucial role in setting the mood and enhancing the visual impact of the show. From the warm glow of the palace interiors to the cold, crystalline light of Elsa’s ice magic, the lighting helps to create a dynamic and immersive environment. The special effects, including snow flurries and miraculous costume changes, add an extra layer of magic to the production.

Costume designer Christopher Oram's creations are equally impressive, with Elsa's iconic ice dress featuring over 10,000 crystals that shimmer and sparkle under the stage lights. The attention to detail in the costumes helps to immerse the audience in the fairy-tale world of Arendelle.

The musical score, composed by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, includes all the beloved songs from the film, such as "Let It Go" and "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" along with new numbers that deepen the narrative. Among these, my personal favourites are "Monster," which explores Elsa’s inner turmoil, and "I Can’t Lose You," a touching duet between the sisters that highlights their deep bond and mutual concern.

The cast of "Frozen the Musical" delivers outstanding performances that bring the characters to life with depth and nuance. Samantha Barks shines as Elsa, portraying her with a blend of vulnerability and strength. Barks’ powerful vocals and emotional depth make her rendition of "Let It Go" a showstopper, capturing Elsa’s journey from fear to empowerment.

Sarah O'Connor, stepping in as Anna, delivers a charming and spirited performance. Her Anna is both lovable and determined, providing a perfect counterbalance to Elsa’s more reserved character. O'Connor's chemistry with Barks adds a compelling dynamic to the sisters' relationship, making their emotional reunion all the more poignant.

Obioma Ugoala brings warmth and charisma to the role of Kristoff. His portrayal of the rugged yet kind-hearted ice harvester is both endearing and engaging, creating a believable and likable character. Oliver Ormson as Hans manages to balance charm and menace, making his character’s eventual betrayal all the more impactful. Jeremy Batt, stepping in as Olaf, captures the snowman’s innocence and humour, delighting audiences with his performance of "In Summer."

The ensemble cast supports the main characters with strong performances and lively choreography, contributing to the overall energy and spectacle of the production.

"Frozen the Musical" at Theatre Royal Drury Lane is a magical and enchanting theatrical experience that successfully translates the beloved animated film into a live stage production. The combination of spectacular set design, stunning costumes, and powerful performances creates an immersive and emotionally resonant show that appeals to both children and adults. Samantha Barks and Sarah O'Connor lead a talented cast, delivering performances that bring depth and nuance to their characters.

While the musical may not have the same whimsical charm as the animated film, its more mature and character-driven approach provides a richer and more satisfying experience. The production's ability to balance dazzling visuals with heartfelt storytelling makes it a must-see for fans of the film and newcomers alike. Four stars for this beautifully crafted and emotionally powerful adaptation, which continues to captivate audiences with its magic and heart.
