All about theatre four star review

"Fisherman’s Friends" has dropped anchor at The Lowry, bringing its blend of humour, heartfelt moments, and sea shanties to a live audience. Based on the true story of a group of Cornish fishermen whose love for singing sea shanties led to an unexpected rise to fame, this musical adaptation builds on the success of the 2019 film and its 2022 sequel. Entering the theatre with limited prior knowledge of the plot, I was intrigued by the unique premise of a musical centred around folk music and traditional maritime songs. The show promised an immersive experience, celebrating the rich tapestry of Cornish culture and community.

The narrative of "Fisherman’s Friends" unfolds in the picturesque village of Port Isaac, Cornwall, where a close-knit group of fishermen, led by Jim (Hadrian Delacey) and his father Jago (Robert Duncan), gather to sing sea shanties after a hard day’s work. Their performances, aimed at raising money for local charities, catch the attention of Danny (Jason Langley), a jaded music manager from London. Danny, hoping to reignite his faltering career, sees the fishermen as a ticket to success. He persuades them to record an album and perform at Glastonbury, marketing them as the "real deal" with their authentic, rugged charm.

As the story progresses, the show delves into the fishermen’s journey from humble local heroes to national stars. The narrative balances comedic elements, such as Danny’s initial misjudgement and the group’s humorous mishaps, with deeper themes of community, tradition, and personal aspiration. A subplot involving Alywyn (Parisa Shahmir), Jim’s daughter, introduces a poignant love story that contrasts with the broader comedic tone. Through a series of ups and downs, the show explores the complexities of staying true to oneself while navigating fame and change.

The set design by Lucy Osborne is a standout feature of the production, transforming The Lowry’s stage into a vivid representation of Port Isaac. The main set, featuring the Golden Lion pub, is the heart of the musical, effortlessly transitioning to a bustling pier and the fishermen's boat. The design utilises multiple levels and movable elements, such as nets, crab cages, and buoys, to create dynamic scenes that shift seamlessly between locations. The set also integrates clever props and stage mechanisms to enhance the illusion of a vibrant seaside community.

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood throughout the performance. The use of warm, ambient lights evokes the cosy atmosphere of the pub, while dynamic lighting and fog effects simulate the unpredictable nature of the sea. These elements combine to immerse the audience in the Cornish setting, enhancing the overall experience of the musical. Special attention is given to the lighting during musical numbers, highlighting the performers and accentuating the emotional impact of the songs.

The music, a blend of traditional sea shanties and original compositions, is performed live by the on-stage band, which is integrated into the story. This setup not only adds authenticity but also fosters a sense of communal celebration. The band’s use of a variety of traditional instruments—such as the accordion, violin, and concertina—alongside more modern instruments like guitars and drums, creates a rich and engaging soundscape. The costumes, designed to reflect the fishermen's rugged lifestyle, feature practical and period-appropriate attire that grounds the characters in their maritime setting. Each costume detail, from weathered jackets to worn hats, contributes to the authenticity of the performance.

The cast of "Fisherman’s Friends" delivers powerful and memorable performances that bring the story to life. Hadrian Delacey as Jim captures the essence of a dedicated fisherman whose dreams and responsibilities are intertwined with his community's well-being. His portrayal is both heartfelt and authentic, reflecting the character’s struggle between personal aspirations and communal duties. Robert Duncan’s portrayal of Jago adds depth to the father-son dynamic, bringing a blend of wisdom and warmth to his role.

Jason Langley’s Danny is a standout as the London music manager who initially views the fishermen as a business opportunity but gradually becomes genuinely invested in their success. Langley’s performance skilfully transitions Danny from a sceptical outsider to a supportive ally, showcasing both comedic and dramatic range.

Parisa Shahmir, as Alywyn, is a true highlight of the show. Her powerful voice and emotional delivery shine through in her solos, such as “Village by the Sea,” and her duet with Danny on “Sloop John B” is particularly memorable. Shahmir’s performance adds a layer of emotional depth to the musical, blending beautifully with the overall tone of the production.

Each member of the ensemble cast contributes to the musical’s vibrant atmosphere, with their collective energy and chemistry enhancing the portrayal of a close-knit community. The actors’ commitment to their roles and their seamless integration into the musical’s setting create an engaging and immersive experience for the audience.
