all about theatre five star review

For over a decade, Bing has been delighting preschoolers with its sweet and relatable stories about life’s little ups and downs. Now, Bing and his friends have leapt from the screen to the stage in Bing’s Birthday, a brand-new live theatre show created especially for little ones. Presented by Fierylight in partnership with Acamar Films, this charming production has already captivated audiences in the Netherlands and Poland and is now making its way across the UK.

In our house, we are big Bing fans! From books to endless TV episodes, Bing and his friends are a regular part of our day, so when we heard that Bing’s Birthday was coming to the stage, we just had to go. I took my two children, Alice and Leo, to see the show at The Lowry, and from the moment it started, they were completely captivated.

It’s Bing’s birthday, and his friends are planning a surprise party! But before the big celebration, there are plenty of fun activities to enjoy, from making banana smoothies to playing on the swings and tossing balloons around. One particularly exciting moment was when a giant orange balloon was thrown into the audience for a lively game of keepy-uppy, much to the delight of the children! When it was finally time for Bing’s party, the audience was invited to join in the fun, playing a game of musical statues and even helping Bing blow out his birthday candles. His birthday present, the Waka-oke, brought even more excitement, with the children encouraged to sing and play along. With familiar moments taken from various Bing episodes, little fans were thrilled to recognise scenes and storylines they knew and loved.

The set design was beautifully done, seamlessly transitioning between the outside of Bing’s house, to his kitchen, living room, and even the park complete with a working swing! The attention to detail made each location feel instantly recognisable, and Leo was particularly impressed, exclaiming, “Wow, Mama, it’s changed to Bing’s room!” The puppets were incredible, looking exactly like the characters from the show, which added to the magic for young viewers.

The music was another highlight, featuring catchy tunes that had children clapping, singing, and dancing along. The songs were fun and well-placed, making the whole experience feel immersive and engaging.

The talented cast did a fantastic job bringing Bing and his friends to life. Vinnie Monachello was wonderful as Bing, capturing his excitement and emotions perfectly. David Tudor as Flop provided the calm and gentle guidance that Bing needed, just as in the TV series. Lola Busari, Nathan Guy, and Emma Hilts all delivered brilliant performances as Amma, Pando, Sula, and Coco, making each character instantly recognisable in both movement and voice. Their energy and enthusiasm made the show a joy to watch.

Bing’s Birthday is a heartwarming, fun-filled theatre experience that truly understands its audience and captures the magic of Bing’s world. With its mix of puppetry, music, and interactive moments, it’s a perfect introduction to live theatre for young children. Alice and Leo were completely engrossed, whether it was helping Bing blow out his candles or giggling at the fun antics of his friends. The show perfectly captures the warmth, fun, and gentle life lessons that make Bing so beloved. Whether your little one is a long-time Bing fan or new to his adventures, this is a show that will leave them smiling from ear to ear.

Bing’s Birthday is a Bing-credible celebration packed with fun, friendship, and plenty of “Hoppity Voos!”
