To mark a significant milestone in its history, The Lowry is celebrating its 25th anniversary with an exciting and bold programme that includes a groundbreaking, free, immersive experience of L.S. Lowry’s iconic painting Going to the Match.
Developed in collaboration with the world-renowned creative studio Layers of Reality, LOWRY 360 will surround audiences with the sights and sounds of Going to the Match, allowing visitors to step right into the painting itself before experiencing the original artwork up close. This unique and innovative experience is designed to immerse guests in the world of football, community, and culture—themes that resonate deeply with both Lowry’s work and everyday life in Salford.
What makes this experience even more special is that it will be completely free. Aimed at breaking down barriers to the arts, LOWRY 360 offers a rare opportunity for everyone to enjoy an immersive adventure into the heart of Lowry’s iconic art. The experience will open on May 3rd and is made possible thanks to the incredible support of The Law Family Charitable Foundation.
Julia Fawcett, Chief Executive of The Lowry, expressed her excitement:
“This is one of the most ambitious and exciting projects we’ve ever undertaken. We're transforming our gallery space with the help of a world-class creative studio to offer an unforgettable experience that will bring new audiences to L.S. Lowry's work. We can’t thank Andrew Law enough for making this vision a reality.”
In addition to LOWRY 360, The Lowry has also launched a comprehensive anniversary programme featuring high-profile shows, bold productions, and innovative community projects. A major highlight is Gods of Salford, a dynamic reimagining of Greek myths told through the lens of Salford’s working-class spirit, performed by 25 young creatives from Salford. Many of these performers come from challenging backgrounds, and the project is a powerful opportunity to develop skills, gain industry experience, and create pathways into the arts.
Fawcett emphasized the importance of community engagement:
“Lowry has always been committed to supporting the local community. Gods of Salford takes our learning and engagement efforts to the next level by blending social impact with a professional, ambitious production. This show will create new opportunities for young people and showcase their talent to wider audiences.”
The 25th anniversary celebrations also include world-class art exhibitions and theatre performances. Families will enjoy a free exhibition of Quentin Blake’s illustrations, showcasing beloved characters from Matilda and The BFG. Lowry’s Promenade Gallery will be transformed by a vibrant mural from French artist Camille Walala, and there will be a special lecture by writer Jeanette Winterson, who will reflect on Lowry’s ability to capture the working lives of everyday people.
Other major events in the programme include:
Live at Lowry: A celebration of 25 years of top stand-up comedy featuring some of the best comedy talent in the country.
Together We Create: A showcase of local talent and diversity.
One Lowry, Many Stories: A stunning interactive art installation and photography exhibition highlighting the incredible people and communities that have shaped The Lowry’s journey over the past 25 years.
Artists Assembly: A gathering of creatives from all disciplines to discuss, collaborate, and shape the future of artist development.
Looking ahead, Julia Fawcett concluded:
“Lowry has been on an extraordinary journey over the past 25 years. From its ambitious beginnings as a new cultural home in the North West to becoming the cultural heart of MediaCityUK, we are proud of everything we’ve achieved. This 25th anniversary programme is a celebration of all that we've accomplished and a look ahead to an even brighter future.”
