The Koala Who Could ARTWORK

This Easter, families in Salford are in for a treat as The Koala Who Could, a brand-new musical adaptation, makes its way to The Lowry as part of its world premiere UK tour!

A Heartwarming Story of Embracing Change

“In a wonderful place, at the breaking of dawn, where the breezes were soft and the sunshine was warm, a place where the creatures ran wild and played free ... A Koala called Kevin clung to a tree.”

Based on the best-selling picture book by Rachel Bright and Jim Field, this delightful stage adaptation brings to life the story of Kevin, a lovable koala who prefers to stay in his comfort zone. Alongside his lively friends, including wombats and kangaroos, Kevin embarks on a chuckle-out-loud journey of discovery, proving that sometimes change can lead to wonderful things.

An All-Star Creative Team

The Koala Who Could is adapted and directed by Emma Earle (Oi Frog & Friends) and features music and lyrics by Eamonn O’Dwyer (The Lion Inside). Following the success of The Lion Inside play, which captivated audiences across the UK and beyond, this latest adaptation promises to delight families once again.

The show is co-produced by The Lowry, Rose Theatre, Nicoll Entertainment, Northern Stage, Unicorn Theatre, and MAST Mayflower Studios. Salford audiences can catch it from Tuesday 8th to Sunday 13th April 2025.

What the Creators Say

Emma Earle, adapter and director, shares her excitement: “It’s a thrill to be bringing this empowering and chuckle-out-loud story about embracing change — whether we like it or not — to life on stage.”

Eamonn O’Dwyer, composer and lyricist, adds: “Just like The Lion Inside, Rachel & Jim have created a beautiful, vibrant, and colourful world for Kevin and his friends. I’m absolutely delighted to be bringing that world to musical life, with all the boing-ing, thump-ing, and thrumming you’d expect in the Australian Outback!”

Matt Eames, Head of Theatres (Contemporary & Commissioning) at The Lowry, remarks: “We know how much families love coming to The Lowry to see their favourite stories played out on stage. I think children and adults alike can all recognise themselves in Kevin the Koala—we all feel a bit Kevin from time to time!”

An Award-Winning Story

With its Sainsbury’s Book Award and Evening Standard Oscar’s Book Prize win, The Koala Who Could has captured the hearts of readers everywhere. Even Claudia Winkleman is a fan, calling it: “Fabulous rhymes, I’m in love with Kevin.”
