Due to overwhelming demand, the Liverpool Everyman Theatre has extended its critically acclaimed production of Willy Russell’s Shirley Valentine for an extra week, with final performances now set for Saturday 5th April.
Audiences have been giving Helen Carter’s performance as Shirley standing ovations, and critics have praised the production’s heartfelt and humorous take on the beloved classic. In response to this incredible reception, additional performances have been added on Thursday 3rd April, Friday 4th April, and Saturday 5th April.
A Special Evening with Willy Russell
As part of the celebrations, the Everyman is also hosting An Evening with Willy Russell on Wednesday 2nd April at 7:30 pm. This one-off event will see the legendary playwright sit down with director Stephen Fletcher to discuss his career, his relationship with the Everyman, and the lasting impact of Shirley Valentine.
Tickets for this exclusive event are priced at £20, with all proceeds going towards the Everyman’s Everyone Starts Somewhere fundraising campaign, which supports the next generation of theatre-makers.

A Homecoming for Shirley Valentine
The Everyman’s 60th anniversary season wouldn’t be complete without a revival of Shirley Valentine—a play that first took shape in this very theatre before becoming a West End and Broadway sensation.
Willy Russell’s deep connection to the Everyman stretches back to the 1970s, when his breakthrough play, John, Paul, George, Ringo… & Bert (1974), premiered here before transferring to London and winning multiple awards. Other Russell works at the Everyman include Breezeblock Park (1975) and Stags and Hens (1978), leading up to the debut of Shirley Valentine in 1986.
A Must-See Production
Mark Da Vanzo (CEO) and Nathan Powell (Creative Director) shared their excitement:
"There’s been such a phenomenal response to Shirley Valentine’s homecoming, we’re thrilled to announce these additional performances. Helen Carter’s astonishing performance as the iconic Shirley, under the wonderful direction of Stephen Fletcher, has been a joy to behold, with standing ovations and so much love."
"We’re incredibly grateful to Willy Russell for his support of this revival and for his generosity towards our fundraising campaign. An Evening with Willy Russell will be a very special night. Today’s announcement is a fitting finale to the Everyman’s 60th anniversary year."
