A Hard-Hitting Story of 1980s Liverpool
Set in the tough streets of 1980s Liverpool, Boys from the Blackstuff follows Chrissie, Loggo, George, Dixie, and Yosser—five working-class men who have always known hard work and providing for their families. But with no jobs and no money, life becomes a struggle. In a world where work is scarce, they must find ways to survive. The story explores their hopes, frustrations, and attempts to make ends meet, all while navigating the pressures of life in a city facing economic hardship.
The Cast
This powerful production features an impressive cast. George Caple plays Chrissie, Jurell Carter takes on the role of Loggo, and Jay Johnson portrays Yosser. Ged McKenna plays George, and Mark Womack brings Dixie to life. The cast also includes Reiss Barber as Snowy, Amber Blease as Angie, Kyle Harrison-Pope as Kevin, and Sean Kingsley as Malloy, with additional performances from Jamie Peacock, Sian Polhill-Thomas, Graham Elwell, Elliot Kingsley, and Victoria Oxley.

James Graham’s adaptation has earned rave reviews since its premiere in Liverpool in September 2023. Directed by Kate Wasserberg, the production shines a light on the powerful themes of resilience, community, and survival, while retaining the raw authenticity of Bleasdale’s original work. James Graham himself shares, "Alan Bleasdale's masterpiece is a story proudly forged in the humour and voice of Liverpool. Taking it on the road to communities around the country feels like the most important thing we could be doing next with our story."

A Legacy of Acclaimed Work
James Graham, known for his Olivier Award-winning play Dear England and his hit TV series Sherwood, continues to cement his place as one of the UK’s most celebrated playwrights. His other notable works include Ink, Quiz, This House, and Best of Enemies. Bleasdale, a renowned Liverpool-based playwright, is best known for Boys from the Blackstuff and has contributed significantly to both TV and film, with works such as Scully, G.B.H., and The Monocled Mutineer.
Creative Team
The production is directed by Kate Wasserberg, with a talented creative team behind the scenes, including set and costume design by Amy Jane Cook, lighting design by Ian Scott, and sound design by Dyfan Jones. Rachael Nanyonjo directs movement, and fight direction is provided by Rachel Bown-Williams of Rc-Annie Ltd.
