A powerful new folk musical celebrating hope, creativity, and resilience is set to take the stage in Leeds this spring. The Flood, a moving and music-filled tribute to the indomitable spirit of Hebden Bridge, will open at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre at Northern Ballet on 19 April before transferring to the Barber Studio at Leeds Playhouse on 14-15 May as part of a northern tour.

Rising from the Waters

On Boxing Day 2015, Hebden Bridge faced one of its greatest challenges when devastating floods submerged homes and businesses. Instead of succumbing to disaster, the community came together, proving that strength and solidarity could turn tragedy into triumph. The Flood captures this extraordinary journey, blending live music, heartfelt storytelling, and true accounts of survival and creativity.

Performed by a talented cast of five actor-musicians, the show shines a spotlight on the resilience of the West Yorkshire community. Through song and story, it paints a picture of a town that refused to be washed away.

A Story of Strength and Creativity

“We’re thrilled to bring The Flood to Leeds,” says writer-director Lucie Raine. “This is a story about what it means to come together when everything falls apart. It’s not just a play – it’s a tribute to resilience and creativity, inspired by Hebden Bridge and its people. It’s a celebration for all communities who have faced adversity and emerged stronger.”

The creative team behind The Flood includes:

  • Lucie Raine – Book & Lyrics

  • Joe Revell – Music & Lyrics

  • Oonagh Johnson – Assistant Director & Dramaturg
